LEGION OF SUPER-HEROES #1 (Josh Williamson, Hayden Sherman) — A thousand years in the future, RJ Brande is dead, the Legion’s symbol is drawn on the wall behind him, and Brainiac 1 of 5 and Matter-Eater Lad are working the case as private detectives. The United Planets is broke, interworld tensions are turning violent, and the Science Police are keeping this investigation off the mind waves. The catch: after the Great Disaster, using powers for crime fighting is illegal — there is no such thing as superheroes in the 31st century. Read Superman Annual: Year One Thousand #1 first; it’s the direct setup for this title.

TEEN TITANS #1 (Kyle Higgins) — A completely fresh take on the team. A new-look Jason Todd Red Hood, Cheshire Cat (the daughter of Arsenal and Cheshire), a currently powerless Eugene Choi from the Shazam family, Fairplay (the son of Mister Terrific), plus two brand-new characters: Proxy, a proximity-based telepath, and Wildcard, who wields chaos manipulation. A missing kid, a relay server named after the old team, and a survivalist group called Ascend telling people they can’t count on superheroes anymore.

DOOM PATROL #1 — The most compelling opening of the three. Niles Caulder’s recurring nightmare, a hooded figure who crosses a room without traveling, and a Doom File entry that ends in shattered glass. Then a broke Doom Patrol takes a heroes-for-hire job finding a blind woman’s missing cat — which turns very strange, very fast. And yes, aliens.

These are three separate stories. No crossover reading required.

ALSO WORTH GRABBING THIS WEEK: Black Tower: The Raven Conspiracy #1 (Ram V, Mike Perkins) — a paranormal spy thriller from DC’s Vertigo label, and Hammerfist #1 (Rick Remender, Image) with a great 90s action vibe. Both are excellent.
